The Jerusalem Mar Thoma Church started as a Fellowship in April 2014 under the guidance of the then Diocesan Bishop, His Grace Rt. Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Theodosius Episcopa and the leadership of Rev. Sam T. Panicker, Vicar of Carmel Mar Thoma Church, Hudson, MA.
The first Holy Qurbana service was held on Sunday, April 27, 2014, at Pilgrim Christian Fellowship, Glastonbury, CT. Mr. Palackel M Jacob made the necessary arrangements for the service with the support of Mr. Varghese Mathew, Mr. Abraham Kurichyath, Mr. Babu P Samuel, Mr. Alex Mathew, Mr. Pradeep John, Mr. Rohith George and Mr. Aby George. Rt. Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Theodosius Episcopa led the Holy Communion service and was assisted by several vicars of the nearby NY and Boston Mar Thoma parishes. Rt. Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Theodosius Episcopa also assigned Rev. Sam T. Panicker to lead the fellowship group during its budding stage. Mr. Pradeep John, Mathews Thomas, Iype Chandy, and Aby George volunteered as coordinators with Rev Sam T Panicker. Rev. Suzannah Rohman of the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Southington, was very kind to open up the church and its facilities for the fellowship to conduct worship services. Since June 2014, the fellowship has started coming together for worship once every month under Rev Sam T. Panicker’s leadership. In September 2014, the fellowship began to conduct Sunday school for children and worship services twice a month. The first executive committee of the fellowship was also established.
In January 2015, the fellowship’s request to become a congregation of the Mar Thoma Church was accepted as the ‘Connecticut Mar Thoma Congregation’ as per the Sabha Constitution. The Connecticut Mar Thoma Congregation was inaugurated by the Diocesan Bishop, The Rt. Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Theodosius, on Sunday, May 3rd, 2015. From May 2015, the congregation started coming together under the leadership of the then vicar of Carmel Mar Thoma Church, Hudson, Rev. Denny Philip, on four Sundays every month for worship services.
The Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma Metropolitan, through His Lordship's Kalpana dated October 6th, 2016, informed the decision of the Episcopal Synod, which met on 20th September 2016, to accept our congregation to the status of Parish with effect from November 1st, 2016 and was conferred the name “Jerusalem Mar Thoma Church, Connecticut” and Rev. Manoj Idicula as our vicar. The legal name of the parish was changed from “Connecticut Mar Thoma Congregation, Connecticut, Inc.” to “Jerusalem Mar Thoma Church, Connecticut, Inc.” in 2017. In 2020, we were blessed and able to accomplish our parish’s goal of purchasing our church building at 115 W Main St, Plainville, CT 06062. On March 21st, 2021, under the leadership of the Diocesan Bishop, His Grace Rt. Rev. Dr. Isaac Mar Philoxenos and Vicar Rev. Biji Mathew held the dedication service of the sanctuary of Jerusalem Mar Thoma Church, Connecticut. Also in attendance were Rev. Aju Abraham (Diocesan Secretary) and Rev. Manoj Idiculla (former Diocesan Secretary and former Vicar), Rev Sam Panicker (Former Vicar) attended via Zoom, and Rev Denny Philip (former Vicar) attended via Zoom.
