The Heart of Christmas – An Invitation for Renewal
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. Galatians 4:4-5 (NRSV)
The birth of Jesus Christ remains one of the most joyous and cherished celebrations of the year. Christmastime brings with it good cheer, familiar carols, festive meals, colorful decorations, and memorable family gatherings. Yet over the years, the spirit of Christmas has subtly shifted. What was once a season centered on giving, reflection, and renewal has too often become a time focused on impressing, acquiring, and busyness. As Christmas grows more secular, we risk losing sight of the deeper meaning behind our celebrations.
St. Paul reminds us in Galatians 4:4–5 that Christmas marks the spiritual turning point of history. In the “fullness of time,” God stepped into human existence through the incarnation of Jesus Christ. Through His birth, life, death, and resurrection, God provided redemption and welcomed us into His family. This profound act of love is the true reason we celebrate Christmas.
Each year, as we remember and rejoice in Christ’s birth, God invites us to draw closer to Him. He calls us to prepare our hearts for renewal, not just outwardly but inwardly. Our Advent practices of fasting, prayer, and reflection help us to slow down, look beyond the glitter, and focus on Christ who has come and who will come again. Advent invites us on a sacred journey that draws us deeper into the mysterious and transforming life of God Incarnate.
Spiritual renewal is essential to our emotional and spiritual well-being. To be renewed is to be revived, strengthened, and restored. When we turn to God in Scripture, meditation, and sincere prayer, He nurtures our inner life, centers our hearts, and gives us a sense of purpose and meaning. Renewal restores our relationship with God, deepens our compassion for others, and encourages us to live with integrity and hope.
This Christmas, may we reflect meaningfully on our lives and open our hearts anew to Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Let us celebrate all that He has done for us and thank God for the gifts of His incarnation, eternal life, and our adoption into His family. May His sacred presence renew our spirits, rekindle our sense of dignity, and restore our courage to rejoice fully.
Wishing you all health, happiness, and the abiding blessings of Christmas – now and in the New Year!
With love and prayers, Rev. Christopher Phil Daniel Vicar, Jerusalem Mar Thoma Church, CT
